Working With Our Cambodian Students

Tooch Van began the Brown Bag Lunch (sponsored by Dona Cady on 10/28/13 held in Lowell) – describing the educational system in Cambodia and what our students may have experienced while growing up there.  Also discussed was what Dona Cady and Tooch Van experienced during their Fulbright trip: No disability support; Hierarchical administration and structures; Student shyness about class involvement; Home life, etc.

The materials passed out included information on first person narratives and film that could be used to discuss the genocide.  Also,  a reading by Amy Tan (Fish Cheeks) was included in the discussion that could be used in comparison with similar readings to discuss multiculturalism and pride in one’s own culture.  A very relevant and useful discussion with a direct connection with our student population(s).

2nd Brown Bag Lunch

This semester’s 2nd Brown Bag Lunch was held on 10/28/13.  It was an opportunity to discuss effective management in various areas of the college.  Management styles not only vary by individual and their culture & experiences, it is also influenced by which part of the college a person came from and what role they previously played at MCC.  This was a time when different colleagues could share their mishaps and what they took away from those experiences, and was a good learning opportunity for all.

The next Brown Bag Lunch topic is “Creating a More Positive Classroom Environment” and will be held on 11/25/13, in the Bedford TLRC.  Come and share your experiences and hear from other participants.

Please note that November will host the last Brown Bag Lunch of the Fall semester as PD Brown Bag Lunches are held on the last Monday of the month from 12:30-1:30 PM.  The first Spring semester Brown Bag is scheduled for February 24, 2014.  PD Brown Bags in the spring are held in the Lowell TLRC.

1st Brown Bag Lunch
